Charles Macintosh, the famous Scottish chemist was the uncle of Elizabeth Pugh Barker, who, in 1929, married a Frenchman Edouard Daubree and settled in the Auvergne region of France. His greatest contribution as a scientist was the invention of rubberised waterproof fabric, hence the adoption of his name for the raincoat.
